The hill-top of Cadbury Congresbury was frequented in Neolithic and Bronze Age times. Substantial defences were built in the pre-Roman Iron Age, when the site became a multivallate hillfort. This was re-occupied in the latest Roman period. New earthworks were subsequently built. Discussion ranges over the cultural, political, and religious affiliations of community.
